WORLD'S BEST CABIN STAFF

Asiana Airlines has been named as the winner of the 2008 World's Best Cabin Staff award, in another closely contested survey conducted by Skytrax.

"Yet again this section of the World Airline Survey was the most closely contested, and for much of the study period, the top 4 airlines were running almost neck and neck" said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax.  "The 2008 Awards represent another clean-sweep of top accolades by airlines across Asia, where service quality is still prioritised as both an important and distinguishing factor of the air travel experience."

"The final winner of the Best Cabin Staff 2008 title is Asiana Airlines, and we congratulate them upon this magnificent achievement. This is the world's largest and most respected Award to recognise Cabin Staff Service Excellence, and is a clear sign of where passengers can expect to receive the best quality of onboard service. Judging from the increasing performance of Asiana Airlines in this cabin staff category, they are rapidly becoming the Best Practice against which other world airlines will benchmark standards".

Malaysia Airlines (the most frequent previous winner of this Award) was pipped into 2nd place for 2008, ahead of Singapore Airlines in 3rd. Thai Airways (4th) maintains a Top 5 position, with Air New Zealand moving up 5 places from last year to take 5th spot in the 2008 results.

"Whilst the primary role of cabin staff is to ensure passenger safety during a flight, that is a function where we generally find the majority of airlines perform well. Over and above that, this Cabin Staff survey is about asking customers to nominate their favourite airline based upon the complete quality of their onboard experience. It is more than just serving meals or tending to customer needs, since the survey assesses the all important soft-service elements of the average trip. The friendliness, enthusiasm and sincerity of staff service are all very marked differentiators when we examine airline performance. Consistency of service remains another critical feature, since it is this which drives future purchase and loyalty decisions amongst customers" added Plaisted.

"As winner of the World's Best Cabin Staff award for 2008, we were not surprised to see Asiana Airlines strong performance in this survey category" said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. ""We extend our congratulations to Asiana Airlines on being named the world's Best, particularly when looking at the strong competition from many much larger and longer established airlines".

"The level of support and customer loyalty that Asiana Airlines appears to develop through their dedication to delivering total service excellence is a sure sign that Quality really does really build success" added Plaisted.

"Of course a typical airline Economy Class trip experience does not offer the same scope to pamper customers as would be the case at the front end of the aircraft, but Asiana Airlines is proof that quality consistency is still very much a reality in the main cabin" added Plaisted.

In 2nd place, Qatar Airways moved up from 4th in 2007, and is the only non-Asian airline to feature in the Top 5. Singapore Airlines maintains its strong World Airline Awards performance, ranked 3rd worldwide for Economy Class, ahead of neighbouring Malaysia Airlines in 4th place and Thai Airways moving up to 5th in these 2008 results.

BEST AIRLINE ONBOARD CATERING

"Onboard catering has often been the butt of much criticism for the airline industry" says Edward Plaisted, (CEO of Skytrax), "but the reality is that the large majority of the industry delivers a good quality product, and in recent years most of the legacy carriers have been able to maintain high standards, often in fairly adverse conditions".

"Of course at the front end of the aircraft the meal spend is not inconsiderable, with vintage wines, champagnes, caviar, lobster and more regularly featuring on the menu. Alongside the food itself, the key changes in recent years for First Class have been upon offering more flexibility in meal times, meals choices - often working on the basis that less is more" added Plaisted. "Cathay Pacific are the winner of this year's Best First Class Onboard Catering Award, with their new First Class concept clearing being a success with customers. Whilst visual presentation, menu choice and food quality are paramount, it is often the finer details of galley food handling and final service delivery that impact on the meal quality, and Cathay Pacific are ticking the box in all these areas."

"In the year that Austrian celebrates it's 50th anniversary, the airline has another honour to mark the achievement, winning the Award for Best Business Class Onboard Catering for the second year running" said Plaisted. "Austrian has developed a very strong reputation amongst customers for the high standards of long-haul business class catering, and their gourmet cuisine prepared by Do & Co continues to impress".

Qantas was named winner of the Best Economy Class Onboard Catering Award, based on their longer haul, international operations, moving up from 5th position in 2007. Etihad Airways, the 2007 winner of this Award maintained a very strong performance with a 2nd place this year, ahead of Austrian, Emirates and Asiana Airlines in 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
